Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers - Grand ¨Pic Saint-Loup Tourisme

Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers is a village in the hinterland of the Hérault region, located in the area of the renowned Pic Saint-Loup vineyards (AOP), and has a strong link with its land and history.

Between Montpellier and Alès, Nîmes and Toulouse or Lodève, Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers has existed as a settlement since ancient times, when a community was established at the crossroads of several communication routes.

Of the first known settlements, which began in the Neolithic period, the village of Lébous (listed as a Historic Monument, privately owned), built in the Copper Age, and several statue-menhirs are still visible.

Then the settlement continued in the area: archaeologists have indeed unearthed remains from all the following periods, as shown for example by the Gallo-Roman sarcophagus reused by the Visigoths behind the town hall.

The present-day village of Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers was born of the unification of two separate communities in the 17th century, Tréviers on the plain and Saint-Mathieu at the foot of the Montferrand castle.

Perched at the end of the Pic Saint-Loup, the fortress of the Count-Bishops of Maguelone, fragile ruins (12th-17th century), painfully evokes its past grandeur.

It was the guarantor of the freedoms granted to the community of the Val de Montferrand and above all the symbol of the power of the bishops of Maguelone, counts of Melgueil. It also represented an opposition to the royal power on the part of the religious, who were vassals of the Pope alone.
