Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel
The village of Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel was built on a crossroads, leaning against a mountain, in the south of an area particularly rich in pre- and proto-historic as well as Gallo-Roman sites, while the summit of the Puech des Mourgues, in the wine-growing plain of the eastern part of the Hérault region, is an invitation to a short stroll.
The puech itself was chosen as the site of an oppidum (Iron Age). Long gone, it was replaced by a small church dedicated to Saint Léon and Saint André.
Then, in the 13th century, the bishop of Maguelone founded a convent of nuns (the mourgues). As an income, he gave them the church of Saint-Germain-de-Fournès, of which a few walls remain. Alongside these two buildings, a larger parish church was built under the patronage of Saint Bauzille, around which the present village developed. Rebuilt in the 19th century because it was too small, it retains few Romanesque elements. Inside, the 18th century frescoes painted in the choir have recently been restored.
The Puech des Mourgues is a Natura 2000 listed area and offers a short hike for those who wish to enjoy a vast and superb panorama over the Pic Saint-Loup and the Hortus, the sea and the Cévennes.
On a more sporting level, the cliffs are a choice destination for climbing enthusiasts.
