Saint-Clément-de-Rivière is a small town which owns a large part of one of the major engineering structures of the Languedoc, the Saint-Clément aqueduct carrying water from the Lez to Montpellier.
With Saint-Clément-de-Rivière, you are closer to Montpellier, the emblematic city of the Hérault and even of Languedoc-Roussillon.
The village has grown over the years between Aleppo pines, vineyards and fruit trees. You might be seduced by the Saint-Clément aqueduct which carries the water of the Lez from its source to the Place du Peyrou in the regional capital. The place, shaded by plane trees, is popular with city dwellers who come here for a family picnic.
Two hamlets remain from the old village and traces of the Romanesque church are included in the present 19th and 20th century building. The 18th-century aqueduct, on the other hand, is well preserved and its arches can be seen at several points along its more than thirteen-kilometre route.
Since 1981, the city of Montpellier has been supplied with water from the Lez by means of an underground pumping station that plunges directly into the water table.
