Saint-Jean-de-Buèges can be the ideal starting point for a visit to the Vallée de la Buèges, a preserved natural site located at the foot of the Séranne mountain.

The small medieval village of Saint-Jean-de-Buèges, located in the area of the Unesco World Heritage Site "Causses et Cévennes", is endowed with a varied environment rich in biodiversity.

Its traditional houses, its Romanesque church and its fortified castle give it a very attractive charm.

At the foot of the Roc Tras Castel, which is ideal for rock climbing (approved site, 46 routes), this village climbs up the slope, protected by the Baulx castle with its beautiful towers. Further down is the Romanesque church, a listed monument. The narrow streets, lined with tall and narrow traditional houses, evoke the memory of past activities.

In the surrounding landscape, the small architectural masterpieces of calades and faïsses (terraces), wells and capitelles... bear witness to a once bustling agricultural life, marked by the pugnacity of the farmers. The Buèges river lounges between old walls and garrigues, then mysteriously disappears, leaving a subsoil populated with a thousand galleries that the experienced speleologist will be tempted to explore.

What is the "Buèges"?

Boia, Bodia, such were the first names of the Buèges valley in the 11th century. The word, derived from the Gallic balga, refers to a deep and humid ground, probably as the valley appeared to its inhabitants at the time. During the 18th century, it was preceded by the article "la" taken in isolation and in a restrictive way, to designate the river.
