Sauteyrargues
Sauteyrargues is a remarkable little village between vineyards and hills, on the border of the Gard and Hérault departments, set on an ancient Gallo-Roman estate.
In Sauteyrargues, the grape varieties at the origin of the Pic Saint-Loup wines are still cultivated: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre... terroir belonging to the AOP Languedoc.
Built on a Gallo-Roman villa, a community settled here, probably in connection with an important north-south communication route.
From the foliage emerges a small chapel "Notre Dame d'Aleyrac" that the apse and the triumphal arch (IMH) allow to link to the Romanesque churches of the region, this chapel attracts many walkers who appreciate the quietness and the beauty of the site.
Notre-Dame d'Aleyrac was enlarged in the 19th century. It was nevertheless built in the regional style of the Middle Ages and therefore fits in well with a tour of the Romanesque art of Languedoc.
